Idont think they should be punished because its part of roleplaying(im not a theif i believe in being respected in the community ask around if you wanna) but theives will just get a bad rep and when pvp comes around they will pay for it by being killed which is also roleplaying so it's better to do it this way or even a trading system but there will always be theives even with a trading system and they shouldnt be punsished with a ban or nothing of the like because they are just playing a role.. Ive gotten stuff stolen and i plot my revenge when pvp comes around   ... not running to tell the first VOL i see or GM... so really think about it befor you say it should be illegal or what not.

i punish with jail as roleplaying you get caught stealing you get sent to jail...though its short i never exceed 10 mins for this crime and some enjoy it, never the less it's the worst punishment i can say is right without a felling of abuseing the player and or my powers

depending on the situation, the most punishment I give to thieves is some jail time, and recover the stolen loot to return, *usually* to prevent escalation of attempts to get stolen items returned to abuse.  when anyone chooses to start being abusive toward a vol/gm/dm, I won't tolerate it.  just like everything else, you gotta be smarter in how you handle it.  like don't trade in common areas....statue in stoneglow, tavern, anywhere civilized in the stonehaven area.  don't shout where you're doing your trade (like the common shout tav after completion of auction), set the details in /tell.

I like thieves, alltho they suck  Smiley . I would even vote to make them a class of thieverish skills and have a guild or somthing where they can plot against "the good guys", maybe even having a chance to sneak into someones appartment and take stuff out. I know this sounds bad, but it could add more thrill to the appartment issues if it was theoretically possible for some1 else to enter if he had the necessary skills. Maybe you had to pay some extra cash to make them extra save, so no thief could enter, or even insure items. But i agree that pvp had to be implemented for a possible direct punishment of the thief. It also had to be a real dedicated class, that would rely on stealth, being no match in dmg for the serious character.

Thieves get jail time (that is if a VOL is convinced they are thieves). Theft is not against the GR and in itself should not be punished as if it was (the exception being alt theft).

Jail is 'punishtainment'.

This recognises that certain behaviouurs are legitimate in that they are not against the GR but are not tolerated by the community: they are against the (not formalised ATM) Community Standards.

In the future jail will be expanded and enhanced (I have four additions right now which I will add when I've finished something else) and more forms of 'punishtainment' will be added (again I have four planned ATM) and, possibly, the decision of who gets jailed, etc. will be taken out of the VOL's hands and put into the hands of some form of 'Judicial Council' and based on trials (but IMO this has many problems, such as, really no-one is interested in screwing about with a long and involved process like a trial).

The exception to all this is the (occasional) player who is a persistent thief and causes large-scale disruption of the game. They are violating GR 3d and will be penalised accordingly.

IMO VOLs/GMs/DMs duties should not include retrieval of the item, whatever its value. If a VOL/GM/DM chooses to try this, the only way they should proceed is by discussion with the thief and voluntary return. Experience has shown that just talking to the thief this can work. However it is often a fairly lengthy process which is why it should not be mandatory. Basically, it is not the most diifficult thing in the world to avoid theft so the victim should accept their loss as a penalty for 'allowing' it to occur in the first place.

As I just posted somewhere else, IMO theft is an important element to gameplay. Or rather, it is one of several factors which allow an important element of gameplay.

If any of the vols choose to do it, that's fine, they're more than welcome to it.  Or if anyone else wants to take up the challenge.

I agree thieving should only be punished by jail time and maybe monetary compensate such as a debt to the community.  Maybe a 'community service' dungeon could be added.

Personally, I think we should jail any suspected thieves and torture them until they confess their crimes and then permaban them.

But maybe that's just me . . .

I think the short jailtime is a good idea because its infact roleplaying but i think when pvp is implied it should also be implied when you die from pvp  (or at all) that you should drop all your stuff in your grave except what your wearing (grave acting like a bag) and people can loot you ect..Like if someone stole something you go and kill them and they drop all their stuff..it would also make pvp and wars and stuff a lot more exciting on the treasure your going to get out of it...but for pvp i thik their should be 'safe zones' like the bank and temples/ and their should be a limit on your 'innocent' kills like a skull ststem.

@kardinel

i played before another game where pvp is alowed, with bad luck u loose there one item, but your idea of "they can loot all my stuff when killing me".   i know what happens, there are some few, the "masterkillers" terrorizing all other players, lower players will loose more and more fun on game, cause they will be killed every day when outside town and later  the killers and reapers play the game alone. if this happens i completly change to a mage char, running with my beginner shirt and the blue pants and only waters, if u kill me have fun on plunder my waters then. Wink

no item loose on pvp please!

but back to topic

today i logged out cause of another thief dicussion on chat, i will do this now more and more often when players denounce other on public as thiefes because i tired of reading the shout then.

ok here something to think about, what happens when i go to beginner area, then i drop a gold and wait till another pick it up, then begin on shout "ey u, give me my gold back u are a thief" ...

trade on save places, look who is near and trade only with players u can trust

and some players here in game better learn to avoid such situations, then everytime to call for daddy can u help me and dont jail the thief, jail the one who makes thiefery possible would be better.

sorry my hard words, but this it true. and i vote for no punishment of thieves now.

Honestly i dont believe that this kind of meddling is necessary. If you like a little thieverish action to take place from now and then and add some spice into the social dynamics, then you gotta leave those guys alone and give them some room, or have it work differently with the arrest of ppl, so that the Vol actually had to catch the suspect 1st to arrest him, but not simply teleport his guy into the cell. That of course would add some fun. Of course if some1 is robbed they want to see the thief punished instead of blaming themselves for not taking the necessary precaution on a trade. And as allready mentioned it would practically become impossible to steal with a proper trading interface where ppl didnt have to drop their stuff anymore.

When i was talking about loosing your stuff from pvp i clearly stated everything that you arnt wearing like your armour, weapon, ect... and i clearly stated that it would be controlable hence only so many innocent killings a day by the use of a skull system...sum 1 atks sum1 they get a skull lasting like 20 min or sumand they arnt innocent so any1 can kill them freely if you get too many innocent kills you can get a red skull lasting for like a week and if your just abbusing the innocent you can get banned
