You will see on the test server a lot of secondary NPCs who currently just stand on their spot and are either only decorative or are purely to perform some basic mechanical function. Which is a bit dull.

So what we're wanting here is some background stories and possibly even dialogue for these NPCs.

For example, what about the Stonehaven Church Priest? ATM he doesn't even have a name or background to go with him. Why did he become a priest?

Or the Stonehaven Pet Seller.. How did he get into the business? Why did he choose ants and puppies?

Or John the Bartender in Stoneglow. Surely the only bartender on the Demon Plane must have a story or two?

Keep in mind that we can't promise to use anything that is posted and even if we do it might not be in the exact format you suggest or your story might be used as a jumping off point for the devs and might no be player visible in the release version. Any input will, however, be extremely useful to development.

My apologies in advance if there's things in here that aren't in B4. I've never even been on the test server, and have only a newbie's acquaintance in B3. Still, Daimonin folks have been good to me and this is something I can take a stab at helping with. Feel free to use what you can, and throw out what doesn't work for you.

  ----------------------------------------

The Stonehaven Pet Seller's name is Pete. And he once had his life saved by an ant.

New to Stonehaven, before he had his own business, of course, he had wandered out into the wilderness outside of the city. And become helplessly lost. It had gotten dark, and the man had blundered around for what seemed like hours when he found himself facing the towering form of an ent! Now Pete isn't a real strong guy, and one blow from the ent knocked him down. He felt pretty sure the next would kill him entirely.

Out of the darkness came the trundling form of an ant. Just a plain, ordinary one, nothing special about it. Except that it hooked hold of Pete's shirt and pulled him out of reach of the ent and back toward town.

To this day, Pete holds a deep admiration for ants. "Ya know they can carry ten times their own weight, don'tcha?" he'll say to customers in his shop. He used his life savings to buy the shop and stock it with animals that he thought might help other travelers, and bring them home again safe.

-----

John the bartender came to Stonehaven intending to open his own tavern. He's been dreaming of his own place all his life, and as an innkeeper's son he knows what it takes.

He saw a chance at having a successful tavern when he realized he'd have a monopoly on the tavern industry. Not that he's greedy, he's been known to let newbies have things pretty darn cheaply after all.

"You give folks a chance and hope for the best. That's how you get people who come back again and again." he says, excusing his largesse. He does have regular (or will have!) customers, and he usually has a smile for them, or asks them "How's it going? Need anything?"

-----

That's it for now. Hope it helps some.

Sorry for double posting (hope subaru isn't around  ), here is a part of a story I've written about Padraig. It is in the form of a memoir by Lanth the librarian, so it contains a few info on Lanth and the origin of the garden in Stoneglow. Following the vogue, I incorporated 'zombie' element in the story but deleted the name G'rozzit because I wan't sure. I will send the whole story to mods but declare here that I confer full editorial rights on the mods including gammar checks, change of names, changing of deleting words, sentence, paragraphs and even the whole thing.  Thank you.

[Edit] Repents sinful past and cuts the 'thread-stopper' of 2000 words and rearranges them into less than 1000 characters.

-------

Padraig was a builder who came to Stoneglow at its re-establishment some 30 years ago. He then joined the mercenary troops and gained a fair smount of fame as a fighter. 2 Years after his initiation, he married Priscilla, a mercenary mage. Their wedding was the first such occasion after the re-establishment of Stoneglow.

About 25 years ago, Priscilla was captured and zombified by a Lich (G'rozzit?) and Padraig had the misfortune of having to slay his own wife in an unfortunate encounter. The remnants of Priscilla were cremated and the ash scattered on the spot, which now is occupied by the garden. After this event, Padraig lost his pluck in fighting, and kept dying without stop for several months. He refused to be cured of the multiple Death Sicknesses, and within a matter of a year he lost all his strength – mental and physical.

He is still believed to possess great wealth that he had accumulated during the heydays of his adventure, but now he spends his time as laughing stock for all mercenaries and residents of Stoneglow. Some even encourages new mercenaries to help him in return for some easy cash.

That's the stuff Shanli and Scram. Smiley

I am currently looking at Sahrus (Stoneglow priest) and Smith (Stoneglow smith). Give me background stories (about the same length as the ones you posted above). Keep them in the third person and I'll translate them to first person (I think that will work better than if you submit them in first person straight off as that gives me more scope to edit). Nothing grand, just so they have a response when you ask them about themselves.

Oh , very cool.  I will make a story for the Stoneglow Smith if you wouldn't mind.  I am a good writer and would enjoy being able to contribute to Daimonin in some way!  Cheesy  I will work on it tonight.

The Stoneglowe Smith

His name is Michael and he is middle aged.
Michael has been resident and smith for Stoneglowe as long as anyone can remember.  He is full of stories and loves to tell customers about his adventures abroad,  using his collection of foreign weaponry as props.  He takes great pride in his work and boasts that no other can forge a sword of the quality and artful detail that he has mastered.  Even though he is highly regarded in Stoneglowe,  he is slightly bitter about having never been challenged.  He impatiently waits for the day that another great swordsmith may show with masterful works and humble him.

Michael is a retired soldier.  He earned an officers rank in the AsYetNamed Army for his passion to improve the technologies of war.  His inventiveness and workhorse nature had been a key advantage to the Army's war canon,  helping it defeat AsYetNamed in the War of AsYetNamed.  He continued working for the Army in this capacity until he became of age to retire.  And retire he did with full honors and in high regards by his commanding officers.

Michael is a family man who enjoys time with the wife in his peaceful cottage on the edge of town.  His two children are adults now and enjoy peaceful civilian life much to Michael's chagrin.

He is a generally happy man that does his work with pride.  A true patriot of his land,  he would take up arms against any enemy that would threaten the comfort and security of Stoneglowe and the land beyond.  In fact,  the other townsfolk generally look to him for guidance in matters of combat and defense of the community.

Is this enough?  I stopped myself before I wrote too much lol

Nice!
I would, however, like to suggest a few added bits along the lines of the services he actually performs (though I don't know whether this would necessarily go in the 'about me' section.
Maybe:
Michael's travels and service in the AsYetNamed army have allowed him to see and handle most, if not all of the items currently found in the world. As a result, when the old wizard who formerly supplied the 'identify' technique died, Michael was the natural replacement. Of course, even he can still struggle to identify some odd items, but he is always willing to learn, and a friend of his in Stonehaven, who deals in rare weaponry and armour is always willing to help him out.

I know the language doesn't wquite fit with the rest, but hopefully it will give the right idea.

OK, cool, I can use most of this.

Details I'll change:
  • Name: the man is called Smith! That's the joke (not sure if it was planned or just stuck because no-one could think of a proper name, but it makes me laugh.
  • The army is the army of Thraal. The fight is against Moroch. Fits nicely with why he is in Stoneglow (demon plane frontier town).
  • No wife (well, maybe a dead one) or peaceful cottage (not in Stoneglow!).
Yes, that's a good place to stop. I just want some basics ATM.

@Talw, yes good point about the iding. I'm not comfortable with Smith working magic like that (well it is a spell but if asked he can give a spiel explaining it as  a skill. Wink

The priest (who's original name was Diligence of Little Glenn, but now prefers to be known just as the Priest), is not a native of Stonehaven.
After the last war, a small group of humans (there may have been a half-elf or two amongst them), sick of the war and the monsters, decided to found a small community dedicated to agriculture, and peace. As part of this they decided to forget all about  Moroch, the Tabernacle, the elder races etc. And start their own relgion, and creation myth.  The only magics they used were healing related, mostly for healing their cattle and crops, making sure their women and babies did not die in child birth, the occasional work related accident etc.
Diligence (aka the Priest), was born in Little Glenn, and like many of his generation, recieved a name reflecting the community's ideals. Like his peers he knew nothing of Stonehaven, or war, or of the world from which his parents came.
One spring day, three injured humans showed up at the square (the village had no fence or gate), the community took them in, used their healing powers to tend to their wounds, fed them bathed them and clothed them. All was well for three days,- and then-
Diligence, returning from work in the far fields, sees smoke rising from the villige huts, and rushing home finds a terrible sight- his people are all gathered in the town square, surouned by 15 of the most vile looking humans (amongst them the three guests whose wounds they had been tending, who were in reality advance scouts for a band of thieving humans attacking those weeker than them). As he rushes forward he sees his mother, father, best friend all killed (and worse), his village meekly go down one by one. Before he knows it he feels his blood rushing, a great roar coming out from nowhere (was it him shouting?), and rushing forward with his pitchfork, he plants it squarley in the chest of the closest attacker. The man goes down, but Dilligence, who of course had no experience with fighting, lost his grip on the pitch fork. Soon he was surounded by all the men, and in no time was killed (he can still remember their laughing faces, as they chopped and hacked at him), only to find himself reborn at the Tabernacle.
At that time the Tabernacle was not tended by any one, all it had was the book in the corner and the alter. upon first awakinging in the Church, Diligence was adressed by the diety of the Tabernacle, who told him the Truth about the world he lived in. Since that day, Diligence, has never left the Church, taking on the mantel and identity of Priest of the Tabernacle. Serving pennece for what he percieves as his one great sin- not fullfilling his communtiys ideal of never taking a human life, searching constatnly for the men who detsroyed his village (to give them another chance to learn another way of life? To give himself a chance to face them and not react lik he did that day?), and for signs that any of his community had been revived by the Tabernacle (although he suspects that only those who die in battle are able to utilize the power of the Tabernacle, which is why he was revived and not them).

I hope this works, I tried to make it consistent with the games back story. feel free, of course to make any changes needed...

Thanks Zrubavel. I'll have to discuss the details with the other B4 mappers, but this could actually fit in and link very nicely with another aspect of the Daimonin world. Smiley

Yeah NP. We can say something like his real name is Sahrus, but he took the name Diligence when he joined/founded the commune. And now that he's left and joined the church he's abandoned his assumed name again (symbolic and all that). It actually suggests some more detail/expansion to the backstory and maybe a way to get more out of it. Wink
