Since Mahewa (part of Sammy's Loneworld) is so vast, we need some sort of transport to get around. In keeping with the era shown by the shipping, I think a Sedan Chair would be appropriate.

It would need a single-tile for the chair (which can be entered by the player) and a pair of mobs with handles each side. The mobs could be an adaptation of the peasant maybe. I think it needs to be a special mob as it needs to appear between the handles. A chair would then be built from front-mob -- chair -- rear-mob. Of course the mob handles would have to join up with stubs on the chair itself.

Any takers?  Smiley

Hmmm ... I could prossibly Blender this ... but - would these mobs need to be animated - i.e. standing frames and running frames, or would they just be static (apart from maybe slight head movements)?  Also, only 1 direction or 4?  (8 directions wouldn't work with your 3-part suggestion).

It would have to be 4 directions, unless the chair is only carried by south-going Zax's...

Oo! How about one of those elephant box-seat things? Elephant exists. Smiley (No, a sedan chair sounds cool.)

Yes, 4 directions, and static I guess. It would be cool if they could move, but it would have to be scripted (using Move or SetPosition), since the player has to be moved as well. (I have done something similar with the airplanes on my islands - about 15 components plus the player all moving in unison  Grin) What would be ideal would be if the code allowed the player to be glued to a moving object, then set the "Chairmen" off on waypoints Cheesy  Hmm, then you have the problem of moving the chair itself.

If only we had "fade to black", then bring the whole lot up in the new position.

I think it would be good if scripts could take control of player (npcs too of course) for some time (options what actions allow) so for example Final Fantasy-like cut-scenes could be possible Smiley

Actually they can, after a fashion. Using SetPosition you can move a player or NPC any old how and "resistance is useless" Cheesy

I  like the idea of having one (set of) chair(s) for north-south movement and one (set of) chair(s) for east west. It would speed up movement but still require players to go catch the right chair...

Actually, there can't be much actual linear movement, as the roads change direction. As I understand it, it's just as easy (easier?) to create an image with rotations, than separate images. But then, I'm no graphic artist.

Right - as you might have seen from my tutorial post, I've started on this.  I decided to go for the "egyptian slave in a loin cloth" for the porters who carry the sedan chair around.  Here are the initial images ...

I will next model up the sedan chair itself, and then I'll have lots of fun aligning the separate models in Blender such that the final images line up properly when put onto the map, before putting finishing touches on the porter himself.

let me ask you simple question: how much faster are 2 running guys carrying third one than player himself?...
btw, if you are not planning for this service to be paid for, you are literally introducing slavery into Daimonin.

if you need means of transport, dont pick up something that is slower than original Smiley

imho, running elephant with chair on his back (common in india?) is much better option

I think the plan is that the sedan chair will in reality be a glorified up teleporter to move the player from one part of the city of Mahewa to the other.  Yes, we could just put a teleporter in ... but that's not very realistic is it?  The alternative is to have the player run through dozens of unfinished maps where nothing happens ...

i think its a good idea, and they would be indentured servants, not slaves.  also i think that perhaps you could make it fairly fast- as if time lapses/speeds up or something, so the chair would move at 3x the speed of the player or so and follows a designated route.  The only thing is that the game will have to be modified to allow the player doll to take the "sedan chair" form or something, i'm thinking... right?

As fast as you want it - just adjust the length of the yield in the script.

When did you last come across a sedan chair porter that would do it for nothing?

Which is why it isn't. Smiley

There are no elephants in Loneworld, and importing them would be a bit expensive.

To see the transport system in operation on the test server (but with temporary arches at the moment of course), go via Grommit's lobby, second room, to Mahewa Plains (exits are labelled) and head south.
