Since almost all of the devs/admins here use Skype for IM/chat, and a bunch of other Dai players do as well, I thought it would be a good idea to have the option of listing one's Skype ID in one's profile information for the Dai forums. AIM, YIM, MSN, ICQ, and a bunch of other IM clients are listed; why not Skype?

But otherwise I agree if we have the others, why not skype?  That will have to be answered by michtoen.

Skype has an IRC-like interface, and i know that the devs who aren't on Skype are on IRC. I haven't used IRC in about 15 years. :p

Well Skype is not quite like IRC: Skype has server-side history, IRC doesn't. So IRC has limited usefulness - unless your PC is on 24/7.

IRC is open by its nature. Skype is cliquey by its nature.

Hehe, smacky.... you know, there have been a number of times this week that i wish you were using skype so that i could talk to you.

Ah, and Skype chats actually aren't done server-sided; from what i can tell, nearly everything is done via the clients.

Well I seem to be on or near IRC about 12 hours a day... (I do turn my PC off).

smacky, Lippy, Anchakor, occasionally Alderan, and a few other devs are on IRC daily for hours at a time.  I would not ignore IRC if you intend to discuss code and feature development.

Yes, IRC has no built-in means of logging, but this can be easily added by log bot, or just I can make a simple script to send my irssi logs somewhere to be processed into more user friendlier format, since I'm on when my friend's server is on, which is 95% of time...

Though I don't think IRC is the best technology for communication... I guess some things never get old...

Anyway, before the Skype vs IRC war start in earnest, to get back to the original point, yes, as TPK says, actual implementation on this site will have to wait for MT.

But getting such a feature added to the forum itself is an SMF issue. I have no idea why it's not already in there, as other IMs are. I don't imagine these are all open source, so surely it's not people worrying over proprietary software/protocols?

But maybe it already is in SMF 1.1.5 (we still use 1.1.4) or an extension?

Anyway, yes as Skype is used by people, whatever its faults may or may not be, I agree that Skype ID should be listable in the profile.

I have nothing against adding Skype ID on the forum profiles...

Also I would appreciate if Jabber ID was added as well...

(btw I don't think any wars are going to start over this... at least not in the OS, distro wars scale )

IIRC, SMF 1.1.5 does not content Skype ID, i had to add manually and as I am a noob, it took me some (okay: some more) time to fix all the errors popping up after my changes - but now it works hehe

By add manually, do you mean you installed an extension (link?) or you wrote your own extension?

"wrote ur own extension" sounds a bit too ambitious for a noob like me: IIRC I just changed one of the other IDs into Skype (Edit: yes, i just took a look: I changed from ICQ to Skype). But one could also just add another field in SMF. U got to go through some files afterwards and change/add some stuff, but for skilled programmers it should be easily and quickly done (cause they are not as blind and dumb as I am ... in these things ). Cleo was a real help and a good teacher in this, btw: He just put me in the right direction - and let me walk allone so i learnt a lot .

Well, it seems kinda unlogical, but for some reason i much prefer having the logs load on the screen, in the chat window instead of going to a logging page. It's just another click away, i know, but my thought process *much* prefers the latter. I don't know why. Maybe it's because i know that the other users will surely get stuff that i tell them when they are offline. One thing that i do notice is that people get back to me when i use skype, and they never did back when we were all on IRC--even with PMs. Things may have changed, but that's my experience.

Ah, Anchakor: we don't use the actual phone service. We just use their text chats (i can't imagine they'd charge for that).

Anyhoo, i'm just discussing... i really doubt any war is going to start over this either
