Welcome to Torchwood's Graphic thread for showcasing my attempts at creating graphics for this game!

This thread originally started off with me trying to create some graphics to match my forum avator - which comes from a photograph of a miniature figure I painted quite some years ago.  I abandoned this work due to copyright concerns, and moved instead to using Blender to create 3D models.

I will update the first post in this thread with my latest images as they become available.

(Where images are indexed, I've only shown the animation, where images in-game are RGBA, then I've given a static image as well as an animated image - as animated gifs are indexed, so some of the detail / fine shading is lost)

For reference ... below is the original text of the post ....

My graphical skills are in general next to useless, but I had sudden inspiration from a recent comment someone made in a forum post, and thought I could turn my Avatar into a mob.  It doesn't really work for a normal sized mob, but does quite well for a large mob (i.e. demon lord sized, 80 x 80 pixels).  Still needs a bit more work perhaps, but initial feedback please?

Obviously, only 1 image so far, but I once I get the first one sorted out, it wouldn't be too hard to take some more photos of the original model for each of the 8 directions.  Not sure how I would animate though Smiley

EDIT:  Few minor updates to image ...

Yeah!  I just reduced the size and reduced the colours to comply with the arch requirements ...

Technically he's a "Great Unclean One" from that Games Workshop.  I painted him about 15 years ago, but I guess we shouldn't be using that name in Daimonin (trade marked probably).

Well, looks like it is from Warhammer as well. I doubt that it doesn't have a copyright on it... Of course, if you changed it a lot we might be able to get something new out of it...

Yes, I was wondering about that Uni ... of course, I only bought the original lead figure from 'Games Workshop' (who do Warhammer) - the painting scheme was all my own (although green is a fairly standard colour!).  Does this mean we'll be ok?  If not, what do I need to change to be OK with copyright do you think?

I've done the other 7 views now (having to learn GIMP quite quickly lol!).  They are a bit 'dull' so I played with the colours on the first one.

If we can't use this because of copyright, then never mind ... was interesting trying (although I still think it looks cool!).

Hi @ all

I like this green little guy Smiley
... when these are the "resting"-arches then you only need 8-24 rotated views for "walking" and 8-24 more for the "attacking" animation ... Wink

Thanks Sammy Sad Wink

Seriously, though - I'm not going to put any more work into it until we I get some kind of decision on the copyright issue.  It may be that really its just a bad idea ...

I think i agree with Torch on this one. Send MT a PM, Torch, and ask him to take a look at this thread (give url). Lets see what he thinks.

Btw, how are you rotating him? You seem to be doing it quite fast (oh, well, i guess you *do* have the model in front of you Tongue)

I'm not sure it's copyright as such because the images themselves were produced by Torchwood.

However it is not beyond the realms of possibility that that model is a trademark of GW.

I suspect legally that is actually quite complex and probably the law is different in different countries.

However, practically speaking, they have released/will release soon a Warhammer MMORPG which will certainly use these mobs. Due to this you can expect them to be less than generous in allowing other MMORPGs to use (the same or derived) images.

Does look cool though.

I think the keyword there is "derived" ... even if I were to shrink / stretch / add extra arms / take off the horns, the images would probably still be recognisable as a "Great Unclean One", and I'm sure the Warhammer people have this whole concept trademarked.  I'll wait for a final answer from MT, but I suspect the safest thing to do is to not use them.

Now, I do have some other figures (I painted about 30 in total before I gave up) and several of those are reasonably "generic".  Most are npc types (fighters, mages, etc.) but I do have some skeletons and a small goblin.  What I could do would be to put the basic photos up in photobucket this evening, and then if anyone thinks one particular one would make a good npc or mob (and we don't think there will be copyright problems) then I'd be happy to do the work to turn it into a set of images.

I'm not so sure...Otherwise, how could we have "Beholders", or "Drows" ? I think if it is modified enough, it should be ok.....should.

OK ... I've uploaded all but 2 of my figs (don't have a photo yet of the goblin, which is annoying as this one might be quite useable).  Hopefully I can link to my Photobuck album, and not have to link to each individual image:

Torchwood's Figures Album

Some of them are definitely NOT suitable, either too detailed (so wouldn't look any good when shrunk to mob size) or too "iconic" (so would have the same copyright issues discussed above, like the Eldar warrior).

If you see one you like and you think we could safely use then let me know and I'll see if I can turn it into a set of images.
